Every child has a right to play or leisure. This right is often denied to children who are under long-term and frequent admission in the hospital for serious ailments such as cancer. One method adopted by us at CEDSE CCC was to distribute toys to all children (not only children directly under out care) whenever an event is arranged in the oncology wards of the three hospitals we cover. The ward would transform into a play centre with children forgetting their pain for some time and parents sharing in their joy. Age appropriate and safe toys do bring some joy into the lives of children.
A daylong celebration on the 14th July 2018 was arranged for some children along with their parents at CEDSE (Centre for Development, Studies and Education) campus in Vamanjoor. An arrangement was made to bring them from the hospital to the centre, where they were welcomed by the members of CEDSE Care Child Cancer team.
Entertained by activities such as finger painting and crystal ball game, it was a joy to see them laughing, jumping and running around. Children participated with enthusiasm in planting saplings in the premises of CEDSE. A packet full of gifts and toys were distributed to all children. The event ended with a shared meal. We wish to continue such events as they bring joy to the children outside the hospital environment and helps in forging a sense of fellowship between children, their parents, social workers and CEDSE CCC team.
